We offer comprehensive, full-scope training in ophthalmology delivered across Eye Foundation Hospital and Eye Foundation Community Hospital, with rotations through all our branches in Nigeria. The program is conducted in line with the curricula of the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO), the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) and the Nigerian Postgraduate Medical College (NPMC), preparing you to qualify as a member and fellow of the relevant colleges.

Short course

Glaucoma Drainage Device (GDD)

Specializes in training focused on the principle, techniques, and clinical applications of glaucoma drainage device procedures for advanced glaucoma management.

What you’ll achieve

Gain the surgical precision and clinical judgment needed to treat refractory glaucoma using advanced drainage devices. By completing this course, you will be prepared to:

  • Refine Patient Selection & Risk Stratification:

    Accurately identify ideal candidates for glaucoma drainage devices (GDDs) and select the appropriate device based on individual risk profiles and ocular history.

  • Master Surgical Execution & Principles

    Implement step-by-step surgical techniques for device implantation, focusing on optimal plate positioning, tube trajectory, and secure patch grafting.

  • Troubleshoot Complex Complications

    Anticipate, diagnose, and resolve high-stakes surgical complications, including hypotony, tube erosion, valve occlusion, and corneal endothelial touch.

  • Optimize Long-Term Postoperative Care

    Establish targeted postoperative protocols to manage intraocular pressure fluctuations and ensure durable, long-term filtration in high-risk eyes.

Learning outcomes

Participants will develop advanced knowledge of glaucoma drainage devices, patient selection, surgical principles, complication management, and postoperative care, enabling them to provide effective management of complex glaucoma cases. 

Who can apply

Qualified Ophthalmologists with recognized postgraduate ophthalmology training, relevant glaucoma experience, and a valid practicing license. Must be proficient in trabec, International applicants must obtain temporary MDCN registration before clinical practice.
